March MODOK Madness

Posted 9 years ago by Art, Comics

I used to get up for the grand spectacle that is the NCAA College Basketball tournament. Now I’d much rather fill my bracket with all the great submissions at March MODOK Madness.

The illustration blog celebrates one of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee’s lesser-known creations. MODOK, which stands for Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing, never really got the respect he deserved. That is, until now. The blog posts numerous drawings of the super villain, by both amateurs and professionals, each day in March.

Lots of artists are taking creative spins on the character. Be sure to check out Modork by Doug Slack, Mohair by Sean Bieri, the Mental Organism Designed Only for Kuddling by Mr. Mr., and my personal favorite, Garrett Hagen’s MODUNK.

Awesome TMNT Poster by Jeff Proctor

I’m sure you’re aware of the awesome posters that have been coming out of Mondo lately. I totally missed out on their Star Wars prints, but I fully intend on snagging one of these limited edition posters for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles by Jeff Proctor.

The poster is going to go on sale sometime on Thursday, January 20th, and comes 24″ by 36″ for $40. Make sure to check in on their site because it will go up for sale at a random time. I’m crossing my fingers that I get one.

Map of the Entire Star Wars Galaxy

It doesn’t get much geekier than this. Gaze upon an entire celestial map of all the planet systems in the vast Star Wars galaxy. This impressive document contains the big landmarks from the film like Tatooine, Hoth, and Endor. There’s also all the places from the expanded universe of novels, comics and video games. This up-to-date map is essential for anyone attempting to make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs. See it in all its glory.

Spagnolo

Mondays are good days for superhero art. Francos Spagnolo created these amazing minimilist DC Heroes and we found them via Geek-Art.net. Batman and Captain Marvel are my favorites, but they’re all awesome. It’s amazing how powerful the lines and shapes are that were chosen by Francos.

I need these in my office.

We here at THS love us some pre-adult, freak of nature, shinobi, chelonians (PAFONSC for short). And we’re pretty sure you do, too.   So you’ll probably dig this sweet rendition of Rocksteady and Bebop like we did.

It comes from concept artist Horia Docius, the man responsible for the visuals in the highly-anticipated MMORPG, Guild Wars 2. Check out more of his awesomesauce over at BADiDEAfactory.
