Star Wars #1 Nearly Makes Up For The Disappointing Prequels

Star Wars #1 cover

It is a dark time for the Star Wars Universe. Fans are still reeling in disappointment over the prequel films. The animated Clone Wars series has met a mostly lukewarm reaction. And the latest disturbance, the announcement of a Star Wars VII film in 2015, holds more trepidation than it does promise.

Dark Horse Comics’ new comic book series is one of the most promising ventures in recent years. For the longest time the Star Wars books have been widely splintered into watered-down, far-reaching story lines. This series goes back to the start.

They’ve just launched Star Wars #1, a new series set in the months following the destruction of the first Death Star in Episode IV: A New Hope.

TMNT Classic Collection Bebop & Rocksteady Are Official

bebop

This news made my day. The awesome TMNT Classic Collection is getting a series two, and it’s going to be Bebop & Rocksteady. It’s kind of surprising that the next series will only be two figures, but they picked the two I wanted most. I’m sure Playmates just wants to gage how people will buy non-Turtle figures in this line before they dive in and make Shredder, Splinter, April, and Krang.

I can’t wait to see the sculpts of these figures. The classic line really nails the design, colors, and fun of the 80s show, and these two characters should look great done in that style. I hope we get some big, ridiculous guns too.

We should get to see these guys next month at Toy Fair (how I wish I was going), so we won’t have to wait too long to get a look.

Thanks to our friend Cody at Crooked Ninja for the heads up.

You Should Commission Some Art from Jeffrey Johnson

We all know I love geek art, but most of the pieces in my collection are prints. That’s all fine and dandy, but there’s something awesome about having an original piece of art that you know no one else has. Our friend Alex Deligiannis sent me an amazing hand drawn version of our Sasquatch logo one time, but until now that has been the only original art in my collection.

Jeffrey Johnson, aka RedHerringJeff, is a friend of a friend, and a very talented artist. I’ve been stalking following him on Twitter and Instagram for a long time, and finally decided that I needed to commission some art. I wanted some Jim Henson art to compliment my Michael DePippo Animal poster, and I knew Jeff was the man for the job.

I already had an awesome 4×4 drawing of Fraggle Rock’s Boober from Jeff due to a contest not getting posted on the site (hey, I paid for it!), so I commissioned another 4×4, this one of Dr. Teeth, and a 8×10 of my hero, Jim Henson.

newths

Hey there! You may have noticed that some things changed around here. I’m currently messing around with a revamped design and trying to make the site a bit more modern. Hopefully you’ll find the reading experience a lot better with this version. I’m still neck-deep in the code so there are still plenty of things that aren’t perfect yet, but I wanted to launch it early and get some feedback.

In preparation for more editorial-style posts, I’ve made images, captions, quotes, and all that kind of stuff a lot prettier. The site is also retina-ready for the first time, so if you’re browsing from a newer iPhone, iPad, or Retina Macbook, everything will look a little sharper.

Admittedly, I haven’t even tested the site in Internet Explorer yet, and I probably won’t. IE 9 should display everything just fine, and if Google doesn’t support IE 8 and below, I don’t think I should have to either.

IDW’s ‘Secret History of the Foot Clan’ #1 is Out

Secret History of the Foot Clan

If you read my Post-Christmas update, you know I’ve recently been plowing through IDW’s new TMNT comic book series, and I’m getting pretty into it. I’m not a huge comics fan in general, but I’m digging how IDW is mixing old-school Mirage and Fred Wolf era Turtles into one comic. There are a couple changes to the backstory that seem odd, but I don’t think we even know the whole story yet.

Anyway, if you’ve been reading along too, you may be interested to know that a mini-series called Secret History of the Foot Clan just started, and it looks awesome. The first issue is out now with art by Mateus Santolouco, who has a very cool style. He posted some art on his DeviantArt page, and I love his version of the Turtles. It seems like IDW + the Nickelodeon Turtles combined.

This issue promises to tell the backstory of Shredder, and I can’t wait to read it. Are any of you guys following the IDW TMNT comics?

Update: I read the issue last night, and it was pretty awesome. The last panel perfectly encapsulates why I love this series. Let’s not spoil anything, but if you read it, what did you think?
