LEGO Collectible Minifgures Series 10

Minifigures Series 10

Even though I’m a couple series behind now, I love the LEGO Collectable Minifigures. I think I have the first 6 or 7 series complete, but lately they’ve been coming out faster than I can find them. I’m not very patient with blind-boxed toys at all, but luckily there are some sellers on eBay that offer complete series for not a whole lot more than retail. Especially when you factor in all the duplicates you’d probably end up with if you bought them at the store, paying $50-60 for a complete series isn’t a bad deal. (I recommend Minifigures Plus on eBay)

I love what LEGO is doing with these series and although we haven’t gotten a Sasquatch minifig yet, they are coming out with some amazing figures. Just look at the old man, paintball player, sea captain, and Medusa in series 10. Awesome. Not to mention the Gold Minifigure totally looks like the living statue from Hot Fuzz.

I hope LEGO keeps coming out with these series because among all the licensed LEGO themes now (as cool as those are), it’s nice to see something awesome and original coming out of the company again.

The Best Action Figues of Oscar Winners

The Best Action Figures of Oscar Winners

Tim and I had this idea for a blog post about Oscar-winning actors and actresses who happen to have action figures, and although I didn’t get a chance to post it before the Oscars this year, at least I can get it in for this week’s challenge from The League.

At first I was going to make this a definitive list of every Oscar-winning actor who also has an action figure, but after doing some research I realized there are a veritable shit-ton of them. Since none of them seem to have action figures for the roles they won Oscars for (that would be awesome), I’ve opted to just collect the 10 best examples I could find.

So, get out your Morgan Freeman action figure and read the rest of this post in his voice, because here we go.

Kevin Spacey

Kevin Spacey

Mr. Spacey has won two Academy Awards so far, for The Usual Suspects and American Beauty. Although I would have dropped some cash to get a Keyser Söze action figure, his action figure actually comes from the 2006 most-people-hate-it-but-I-kind-of-like-it movie Superman Returns. I’m impressed at how easily they were able to make this tiny piece of sculpted plastic look like him. When I track one down, I’m going to replace his body with a generic guy-in-a-suit so I can recreate the Will you go to lunch! scene from Glengarry Glen Ross.

Cartoon Network Classics Getting Comic Books From IDW

Cartoon Network + IDW

I was in middle school during the golden age of Cartoon Network, when you could tune in for shows like Johnny Bravo, The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter’s Lab, and Samurai Jack in the evening and then pretend to go to sleep but really stay up so you could watch Space Ghost Coast to Coast. The awesome thing about most of those shows is how well they hold up. I can still watch them today and enjoy them just as much (if not more) than I did over a decade ago.

So that makes the announcement from IDW Publishing pretty exciting for geeks my age. This year they’re going to start publishing comics based on classic Cartoon Network shows. With the Adventure Time and Muppet comics, I’ve realized that cartoon-based comics can actually be a lot of fun and not feel as pretentious or faux-artsy as a lot of more adult comics these days, and these 90s Cartoon Network shows would make great little comics.

Cool Stuff: Crocheted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Crocheted TMNT

Browsing the tag archive for TMNT related terms on Instgram is something I find myself doing a lot these days. Through that I’ve found a lot of cool folks like Michelle Phillips (@ttvphoto), who made these awesome crocheted Ninja Turtles from scratch. I first noticed her project in it’s early stages and then watched her progress until they were done.

Seeing as how I have zero craftiness, I love seeing talented people make cool geeky items like these. Michelle has an Etsy store, so keep an eye out in case she ever lists one of these crocheted Turtles!

Vintage Console Illustrations from Signalnoise

Signalnoise's Vintage Console Illustrations

If you’re interested in geek art, you have probably seen some of the awesome work from Signalnoise (aka James White). I’ve been following James on Instagram for a long time, and have always been a fan of his art. Checking out his poster designs for Terminator 2 and The Thing will give you a good sense of his style.

Over the last couple days, James has been Instagramming some very cool illustrations of vintage video game consoles, and today he posted them all on his blog. He illustrated the iconic designs of the Atari 2600, NES, Game Boy, NES Zapper, Super Nintendo’s controller, and the Commodore 64. They’re all great and I’d love to have them all as prints in my office.

I hope James continues with these illustrations, especially if it means seeing some Sega hardware. I’m sure his take on the Genesis would be awesome.

Make sure to head over to his site to read more about his process.
