Hasbro’s cutesy action figures. You know you love them, you know you want them all over your desk, mingling across franchises like the characters have known each other since they were cute little babies with giant hands. You love seeing Optimus Prime battling that big, bald, Nazi Mechanic guy from Indiana Jones while Cobra Commander and Chewbacca wait for round two. There’s just something about the little buggers.
They may have started with Star Wars, but one of my favorite lines is the Marvel Super Hero Squad. They’ve been around for a while, but they’re about to burst into every nook and cranny of kids culture this year with the release of a series on Cartoon Network and even an upcoming MMO.
The Appeal
- They’re Cute – This one is pretty obvious. They’ve taken characters we love and turned them into these little disproportioned people with huge hands, what could be better?
- They’re Pumped-Up – They always look so happy, and as a bonus, they’re always ready with an open hand for a very enthusiastic high-five. They even made the Sentinels smile, and they’re programmed to kill mutants.
- Perfect Deskorations – Since these lil’ guys are so squat and have huge feet, they stand up way better than your Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles did back in the day. This makes them pefect for geeking out your work space. My wife had a brilliant – pick up an inexpensive tiered shelve like this and display them in style!
- Again, They’re Cute – Even the characters who are stone-cold killers are cute. It took a while but there are even a couple different versions of everyone’s favorite murderers, Deadpool and The Punisher.
The New Stuff
The newest waves of the Marvel Super Hero Squad to come out is all based on Wolverine. The set I picked up includes Wolverine in his normal yellow duds, Clear Iceman with ice cubes coming out of his fingers, Collusus, and The Blob. The Blob is quite possibly the least cute of all the cutesy dudes. And not because he’s fat, he just looks weird, like one of those really fat babies you’d see on Maury back in the day.
