‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Review

Guardians of the Galaxy

Things have been quiet around here again. Sorry about that! I’ve been busy launching a new business and the only thing I’ve had the energy or time for resembling blogging lately has been maintaining the THS Instagram account, but hopefully that’s changing soon. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been watching geeky movies, playing video games, etc, I just haven’t had the energy to blog about it.

That said, it’s been a pretty eventful few weeks for us geeks. I’m sure you all are wondering if I’ve seen the new TMNT movie, but I haven’t. I’m really divided on seeing it (at the least I could write a bad review) but being so busy and also having so many awesome things I’m excited about has made me strangely at peace with the idea that there’s a new Turtle movie out there that I haven’t seen. The opinions I’ve read from the people I trust basically let me know that the movie is terrible, and honestly all the people I’ve had telling me it’s good have had to preface their recommendations with things like “If you don’t think about it…” or “It’s just the Turtles…” which is bullshit to me. I’ve gotten called out on Instagram and Reddit (ugh, don’t go to the TMNT sub) for being whiny for wanting a good TMNT movie, and I’m kind of over the whole thing. I’ll torrent it when it comes out on video to make sure I don’t contribute any money to Bay’s production company, and maybe write a late review.

Anyway…

Meanwhile, I’ve seen ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ twice

And it’s amazing.

Cool Stuff: Marvel Superheros ‘Got Milk’ Commercial

Posted 6 years ago by Television

I vaguely remember seeing this commercial back in the day, but it’s interesting to see now that we’re actually used to having The Avengers in live action on film. The costumes in this Got Milk commercial are straight out of the comics, and are pretty interesting. That Hulk actually looks kind of awesome! I know they wouldn’t have been able to use that for a movie very well, but it looks really cool. And that Spidey costume doesn’t look bad at all.

Iron Man on the other hand looks a little derpy.

‘Disney Infinity 2.0’ Avengers Play Set Gameplay Video

Posted 6 years ago by Games

Confession: I haven’t played Disney Infinity since I wrote my initial review of it a few months ago. I really enjoyed it, but getting the game base and figures out every time I wanted to play was enough to keep me away (combined with the fact that I pretty much abandoned my Xbox 360). However, Disney recently accounted the 2.0 version of Disney Infinity which is all about Marvel Superheroes, and I think I’ll definitely be checking this out.

My favorite part of the first Disney Infinity was the Incredibles playset and how they perfectly captured the superhero feeling in a cute and simplified way. I think playing as Marvel characters in this style will be a lot of fun, not to mention mixing Marvel and Disney characters in the toy box mode. Just think, maybe the 3.0 version will be Star Wars, and then we can finally mash up Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars characters in the same game.

Disney Infinity 2.0 hits shelves in the fall for current and next-gen systems. Will you be picking it up?

New ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Trailer Shows Off Star Lord’s ALF Collection

ALF

Have you seen the awesome new trailer for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy? If not, take a moment and watch it below. Wasn’t that great? We know that Star Lord (Chris Pratt) is a half-human/half-alien who was taken from Earth in the early 80s. It looks like his nostalgia for Earth and the 80s in general will extend further than the Walkman he carries around in the film. Check out this still from the trailer. ALF trading cards and puffy stickers? A Troll Doll? Scratch-and-Sniff stickers? Awesome.

If Star Lord had been taken from Earth in the early 90s instead, there would totally be a He’s back, in POG form! joke in there somewhere.

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Might Be My New Favorite Marvel Movie

Posted 6 years ago by Movies

The Winter Soldier

I saw Captain America: The Winter Soldier last night, and although I had myself hyped to the max about the sequel the one of my favorite superhero movies of all-time, I didn’t expect it to be so damn amazing. After talking about it with my wife today I realized that TWS may be my new favorite Marvel movie. The story, action, and writing are all excellent and even though I hold The Avengers on a pretty high pedestal, The Winter Soldier may be my new favorite.

Maybe.

First off, the action. The fight scenes in TWS are so well choreographed and hard-hitting I was giddy in the theater. Winter Soldier shows off Cap’s talents better than his other two movie outings for sure. He easily knocks out thugs, sends them flying with a kick, and is super agile.

That wouldn’t be enough to make this my favorite Marvel movie by itself, but the supporting characters are great, the story is very interesting (and will impact the Marvel Cinematic Universe more than any other film) and the dialogue between characters is a lot of fun. TWS made Nick Fury seem like a real person to me for the first time. I hated his dialogue in The Avengers, but in TWS he feels like a real person and actually made me excited to see him in more movies. The same goes for Black Widow. She has more depth in this movie and has some great banter with Cap.
