Review: Disney’s Brave Storybook Deluxe and Interactive Comic

Brave

Brave is a rather brave venture for Pixar. It’s the company’s first female lead, but more importantly, Pixar is coming off the lackluster Cars 2, a movie so bad I couldn’t finish watching it and my four-year old has never requested it again. So far the gamble seems to be paying off as audiences are embracing the firey-haired Merida and the story of her struggle for independence. If you’re one of the millions who have already seen the movie, you can relive the adventure at home as a Disney ebook, and also as a motion comic, both available for iOS.

If you’ve read my reviews of Disney ebooks before, you’ll know that Disney does a pretty decent job of getting and keeping kids’ interest through the use of quality artwork, good music and sound effects, and interesting animations. Brave is no exception. In fact, in a lot of ways, Brave exceeds any previous efforts I’ve seen from Disney’s ebooks.

Brave

First, the artwork is absolutely stunning throughout. I said before with The Jungle Book that many of the “pages” were screen-capture worthy. With Brave, nearly every page would make a great background for your iPad. Read More

Missing Links

The Top Hat Sasquatch team reads a lot of blog posts every day, and some slip through the crack or just don’t warrant their own post. That’s where Missing Links comes in. Every few days we collect the best links we’ve come across and pass them on to you.

A.I.M. Terrorist Group To Appear In IRON MAN 3?
We can only hope A.I.M. is going to be in Iron Man 3 so that we can get some MODOK in Captain America 2. Hey, a geek can hope!

Toyriffic: Kenner Super Powers Batmobile
Very cool vintage Batmobile toy profiled over at Toyriffic. I'd love to snag one of these somewhere.

Franklin the Turtle goes XXX | Cartoon Brew
Wait…what?

Do Fire Flowers Still Work In This Awesome Super Mario Aquarium?
Incredible Super Mario-themed Aquarium, but come one, how could they pass up recreating the swimming level instead of the first world?

Finding Nemo Blu-ray Finally Set for December 4th! | Pixar Talk
I've always thought 'Nemo' was going to be the best-looking Blu-ray once it was released. I can't wait to see this movie in HD for the first time.

Missing Links: ALF, The Dark Knight Rises, The Simpsons, The Avengers

ALF Movie in the Works? Maybe | /Film
For one reason or another, I haven’t written about Alf much on the site, but I love Alf. I still watch it occasionally and find it to be pretty funny still, and I’ve been patiently waiting until Gordon Shumway makes his way to the big screen. Plus, I’ve been wondering what Paul Fusco has been up to since the Alf days. I’d go see an Alf movie. Would you?

How Does THE DARK KNIGHT RISES End and Where Will BATMAN Begin Again?
I agree, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Batman dies at the end of TDKR. Think about it, Nolan’s Batman seems like a temporary hero, not a long term solution to Gotham’s problems. They’ve been marketing TDKR with phrases like The Epic Conclusion and The Legend Ends, almost like they’re preparing audiences for the possibility.

3D Simpsons Short Starring Maggie Simpson In Front Of “Ice Age 4″
I have no interest in seeing an Ice Age movie again, but seeing a Simpsons short film might be worth the price of admission. I’m still bummed I didn’t get to see the Simpsons Movie on the big screen, but seeing a short might help numb the pain.

Pixar’s “The Avengers”
What the Avengers would look like if they were Pixar characters. Some interesting choices here, but you have to love Sully as Hulk.

Planet of the Cars

In the inaugural episode of Bubble Pipe Theater, Tommy, John, Tim, and Rob discuss the ‘Baby Monkey (Going Backwards on a Pig)’ phenomenom, a horrible movie called Birdemic, an eerie correlation between Planet of the Apes and Pixar’s Cars franchise, and everyone’s current obsessions. We’re excited to kick off this geek culture podcast, and we hope you bear with us through the first few episodes as we get all the technical details ironed out.

D23 Expo News Roundup: Avengers, New Pixar Films, Muppets, and More

Posted 9 years ago by Movies

Disney just held the second ‘D23 Expo’ this past weekend in Anaheim, their membership-based fan event, and released a ton of info on upcoming movies. We weren’t able to make it (mark my words, next year) but a lot of blogs have been doing a great job of summing up the news. To make it easy to find out what was announced, we’ve compiled all the biggest stories into this roundup. I’m sure we missed something, but everything here is pretty awesome. It definitely sounds like Disney is doing a good job with these conventions.
