Thoughts on the new ‘Ultimate Spider-man’ Cartoon

Spider-man

I don’t watch a lot of new TV. Adventure Time, Community, and The Office are the only shows I bother staying up to date with, which usually means digitally acquiring episodes or buying them for silly prices on Amazon Instant because we have no actual TV channels at my house. But with a summer full of (hopefully) awesome comic book movies ahead, I’ve gotten the itch to get back into some animated superhero shows.

So, a new Spider-man cartoon based on the Ultimate line of comics, with a heavy dose of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Coulson? What? Stan Lee plays a janitor at his high school? This sounds like a pretty awesome Spider-man show.

Then I watched the first two episodes.

LEGO Review: Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown

Wolverine on his Bike

After months of talking and talking about the prospect of Marvel LEGO sets, they’re finally here. The first sets officially come out on April 8th, but I was lucky enough to snag a couple on Walmart.com a week or so ago before they were quickly sold out. I got two of the cheaper sets, 6865: Captain America’s Avenging Cycle and the set I’m reviewing today, 6866: Wolverine’s Chopper Showdown.

The Lowdown

In addition to all the awesome Avengers LEGO sets coming out, LEGO is starting a X-Men line with the release of this Wolverine set, and honestly, it’s going to be a hard set to top. At $20, the value for LEGO/Marvel geeks is insane. Not only do you get a pretty awesome-looking helicopter, but you get almost perfect minifigure versions of Wolverine, Magneto, and…Deadpool. Are you kidding me? Deadpool exists in LEGO form, and was one of the first Marvel characters to be released?

Comic Book Review: Nature of the Beast

Posted 8 years ago by Comics

Bruno Bolo has issues. His wife died a few years ago, leaving him alone to raise his rebellious daughter. He has a bit of a drinking problem, and his one and only friend is The Duke, one of the largest alligators in captivity. To eek out a living, Bruno stars in a small roadside attraction where he and The Duke wrestle a couple of times a day to the oohs and awes of easily impressed tourists. So when he’s approached by a reality TV producer looking to stage Beast Wars, a battle royale of the meanest animals on the planet to determine who the real King of the Jungle is, Bruno agrees to enter The Duke into the contest in exchange for $100,000 a match.

Held on a remote island away from animal cruelty laws, Beast Wars is a truly savage contest featuring fight tickets that seem to have been inspired by listening in on a group of middle school boys at recess, like Shark vs Polar Bear and Alligator vs Gorilla vs Lion. Of course it’s not exactly natural for a gorilla and an alligator to fight (especially to the death), so the showrunners have developed a special spray that greatly enhances an animal’s aggressive tendencies. Curious, Bruno decides to try out a single shot of the stuff himself and it sends him into a berserker rage, letting out all that pent up anger and the feelings of helplessness that he’s been holding back since his wife died and his life went down the tubes. He quickly becomes addicted to the spray and its sense of raw freedom, finding that the more he inhales the less human he becomes.

Introducing Bubble Pipe Network

Bubble Pipe Network

If you’ve tried clicking on an episode of our podcast in the last couple days, you might be wondering why you were redirected to a new site. Well, it’s been a long time in the works, but this week we opened up BubblePipe.net, the home to our very own geek Podcast Network. After doing our show for a while we realized that we had a lot more ideas and people than could ever be fit into Bubble Pipe Theater, so we started brainstorming and Bubble Pipe Network was born.

We have a vision for the site being the home of all kinds of awesome podcasts for geeks, whether you’re a movie fan, gamer, collector, or crafty person. Right now we’re launching with three shows but more are on the way. Bubble Pipe Theater will be the catch-all, flagship show of the network, along with:

  • Watching the List – Rob Lammle’s companion podcast to his new project Watching the List, where he is watching his way through the entire National Film Registry.
  • Handmade Alley – Andrea Lammle and Holly Schroeder bring you the latest news, views, trends and tutorials from the growing indie craft community, as well as special interviews with fellow creatives, to entertain, inform, and inspire you to get your craft on.

We’re also going to be launching a pretty cool thing soon called Bubble Pipe Pilots that will let you help us decide which ideas are worthy of being their own podcast. When we have a new idea for a show, we’ll record a pilot episode and it will go up in the Pilots feed, and you’ll be able to provide feedback. If we get a good enough response for a particular pilot, we’ll launch it as a standalone show.

I have to mention that our awesome logo was done by Alex Deligiannis, and without it I wouldn’t have had the inspiration to finish the design of the site. Thanks Alex!

Check out Bubble Pipe Network and let us know what you think!

Kids Dressed As Avengers Assemble!

Posted 8 years ago by Movies, Toys

Hasbro definitely gets an A for their efforts in hiding the fact that all these Avengers-branded roleplay toys are just rereleases of the toys that came out for each heroes’ individual films. The catchy/annoying rap is made tolerable by the cool shot of the kids standing around in a circle emulating the poses from the Avengers trailers alone.

Granted, there’s no Hawkeye or Black Widow to be found. How hard would it have been to have a kid in some shades chillin’ with a bow? Or a young lady with…a gun?

On a semi-related note, Walmart.com has begun selling the Avengers LEGO sets as of yesterday. I snagged a couple and I’m glad I did, because they’re showing up as out of stock now.
