Max Fleischer’s Superman DVD Review

Posted 11 years ago by Movies

Ever since I was little and I had a VHS set of public domain cartoons, I’ve loved the 40s Max Fleischer Superman shorts. To this day, I still think they are the best incarnation of Superman in film. The stories are simple, the action is awesome, and it takes place in the time that Superman was created, the time that he seems the most relevant in.

Like Popeye, these have been available on the bargain-bin DVDs for a while, but in horrible quality. I’ve gotten a couple as Christmas presents in the past, and I ended up throwing them away. Thats why I was super pumped when I heard that Warner Bros. was releasing them the right way. Max Fleischer’s Superman: 1941-1942 is the equivilant of the awesome
Popeye sets they’ve been releasing (and that I still need volumes 2 and 3) and it is just as great.

SMC Rewind: Under the Umbrella Tree

Posted 11 years ago by Television

The 90s had more than its fair share of puppet shows on TV, from Eureka’s Castle, to Allegra’s Window, and Today’s Special (Ok, so that was the 80s, but close enough). One show that I always find myself trying to remember is Under the Umbrella Tree.

Under the Umbrella Tree followed the adventures of Holly Higgins, Iggy Iguana, Jacob Bluejay, Gloria Gopher, Louis Bird, and Mitzi the Dog. There’s no main premise, just a bunch of puppets living under a huge indoor umbrella tree. It originally aired on CBC in Canada, but if you’re like me, you caught it in syndication on the Disney Channel.

10 Retro Shows I want on DVD

The World of David the Gnome

I fondly remember watching David the Gnome on Nickelodeon all the time. My memories of watching Nick in the 90s makes me think of Grandma’s house, peanut butter sandwiches, Sprite, and Tom Bosley. I’m not one to watch episodes on YouTube, so I would love to have some DVDs of this show. It gets bonus points for such and awesome theme song!

salute

Salute Your Shorts

When it comes to the live action kids shows of the 90s, I think Salute Your Shorts was the absolute best. The characters and stories were cool, it wasn’t trying to be profound at all, and it was just fun. Donkeylips , Ug Lee, Telly, Sponge, Budnick, they were all great. Pinsky is of course in the band Rilo Kiley now with the girl from The Wizard, a double dose of nostalgia. There have been plenty of bootleg DVDs around, but I want the real thing.

histeriaad

Histeria!

I love hearing about my wife’s nostalgia, and Histeria! was definitely her favorite cartoon. It was a great show from the 90s WB era, and the cool thing was that it actually was a little educational. Maybe with Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Pinky and the Brain, and Freekazoid on DVD now, there’ll be a chance.

25th Anniversary TMNT Leonardo Unboxing

Posted 11 years ago by Toys

I don’t really know why I took a picture of the 25th Anniversary Leonardo next to my
Obama action figure, but thats not important. The important thing is that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles turn 25 this year, and we all need to spend lots of money on them so they will hang still be around for a few more years. It would be pretty cool to be “writing” about the 50th Anniversary of the TMNT in 2034 on my new iBrain chip, or watching new TMNT movies in glorious HD Holovision.

Anyway, what better way to celebrate the toys of your past then duplicating them exactly and charging $8.99 for them? If I had kids, I’d be living vicariously through them and forcing them to play with these instead of Pokemon or Big 10 or whatever it is that kids play with these days.

So anyway, I bought a Leonardo, took it home, and got out 80s Michelangelo in the box to compare. The boxes are pretty similar, except with the new ones they didn’t want to print cards specific to the figures, so they just made one generic card. This means the back does not have an ID card for the character, which was always my favorite part of the packaging. Another thing its missing is Pizza Points. NO PIZZA POINTS? WTF?

Doctor Octoroc, a 8-bit art and music enthusiast, has put together a cool 3D bead sprite tutorial for building your very own Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Party Wagon. This would be pretty cool sitting on my desk, but I’m too lazy to actually try making it.

Dr. O really takes the 8-bit bead sprite artform to a new level, make sure to check out some of his other creations.
