Disney Halloween Compilation: Donald’s Scary Tales

Scary Tales

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I grew up watching the classic Disney short cartoons. I caught them as often as possible, on the Disney Channel, on VHS, but mainly on our RCA Selectavision discs.

Even though the format was dead and gone a year before I was born, we had a player and about 300 pounds worth of discs. Even among Jaws, Superman, Bad News Bears, and Indiana Jones, the Disney shorts were what I watched the most.

And, among those, it was Volume 3 of the Cartoon Classics series, namely Scary Tales, that was my favorite. What’s so cool about Disney shorts is that each generation remembers them in a different way. You’ve got the old folks that were around when they were played in theaters and the younger crowd that grew up with compilation tapes and clip shows on TV. So, like a mix tape, you not only remember the cartoons, but how they go together. Being Halloween, I thought I’d share some thoughts (and videos!) of this creepy edition to Disney Home Video.

Tom and Jerry’s Greatest Chases Vol. 3 Review

Tom And Jerry

More Tom and Jerry DVDs! Sometime I need to try and capture on video the typical reaction someone has to seeing my DVD collection. At first it looks like the collection of someone who has lots of kids to keep entertained…but we don’t have any kids yet. Basically, about 90% of our DVD and Blu-ray collection consists of cartoons, and when it comes to classic animation, I can’t get enough.

Tom and Jerry

Thats why I’m excited to see more sets like these. Tom and Jerry’s Greatest Chases Volume 3 is the newest addition to my collection, and it contains 14 classic cartoons. They were originally released between 1941 to 1956, and include:

Last week I reviewed the WB DVD set of Tom and Jerry Greatest Chases Vol. 2, and this week Warner Bros. is continuing their quest for awesomeness with the release of the Tom and Jerry Chuck Jones Collection.

Chuck Jones is remembered most for his amazing work on Looney Tunes, Merrie Melodies, Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and his Oscar winning short The Dot and the Line: A Romance in Lower Mathematics, but from 1963-967 he gave the world his version of one of the longest running animated theatrical series; Tom and Jerry.

If you’re like me, you’re always looking to add some classic cartoons to your DVD collection. Well, this week Warner Bros. is releasing a great title – Tom and Jerry’s Greatest Chases, Vol. 2.

This is of course a follow-up to Tom and Jerry’s Greatest Chases (which is a steal right now), and this collection adds another 14 shorts to the series.

These shorts were originally released between 1943 and 1951, and includes the Oscar winning shorts Mouse Trouble and Quiet Please! If you’ve ever watched Tom and Jerry, you know to expect the craziest 7 minute long cat-and-mouse chases money can buy, and this set doesn’t disappoint.

Mickey’s Trailer holds a very special place in my childhood, and is without a doubt my favorite Disney short. I watched a ton of Disney shorts growing up, mostly thanks to my family’s RCA Selectavision player (article to come), a few VHS compilation tapes, and the Disney Channel.

One compilation that I watched quite a bit was called On Vacation with Mickey and Friends, which was six shorts put together with some new animation of Jiminy Cricket trying to track down Mickey and his pals. These compilations were done pretty well, and were a great introduction to these classic shorts.

Watch the short after the jump.
