10 Retro Shows I want on DVD

The World of David the Gnome
I fondly remember watching David the Gnome on Nickelodeon all the time. My memories of watching Nick in the 90s makes me think of Grandma’s house, peanut butter sandwiches, Sprite, and Tom Bosley. I’m not one to watch episodes on YouTube, so I would love to have some DVDs of this show. It gets bonus points for such and awesome theme song!
Salute Your Shorts
When it comes to the live action kids shows of the 90s, I think Salute Your Shorts was the absolute best. The characters and stories were cool, it wasn’t trying to be profound at all, and it was just fun. Donkeylips , Ug Lee, Telly, Sponge, Budnick, they were all great. Pinsky is of course in the band Rilo Kiley now with the girl from The Wizard, a double dose of nostalgia. There have been plenty of bootleg DVDs around, but I want the real thing.
Histeria!
I love hearing about my wife’s nostalgia, and Histeria! was definitely her favorite cartoon. It was a great show from the 90s WB era, and the cool thing was that it actually was a little educational. Maybe with Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Pinky and the Brain, and Freekazoid on DVD now, there’ll be a chance.
Eureeka’s Castle
This goes back to when I was a lot younger, and I don’t know how rewatchable this would be, but nontheless it was a favorite of mine. Who can forget Batley, Magellan, Bogge, and the original, non-obnoxious Quagmire?
Mighty Max
Seeing how I love toys and cartoons, cartoons based on toys always make me happy. Transformers, Street Sharks, and Mighty Max always come to mind. I loved the tiny Mighty Max toys, and the cartoon was actually done very well.
Bucky O’Hare
I wrote about Bucky O’Hare in the old SMC days, but I thought it was worth mentioning in this list. It definitely wanted to be the next TMNT. The toys were pretty sweet, but the show was super lame. It was so lame, however, that it would be really funny to watch again. It’s available in the UK, but not here for some reason.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Just as the Power Ranger series finally retires in every form from television (besides reruns), it would be a great time to release the first incarnation on DVD. The shows are so formulaic and over the top that they are very entertaining. They are available in iTunes, but no DVDs other than a few “greatest hits” that contain episodes of the later versions that us 80s/90s kids don’t care about.
Double Dare/Wild and Crazy Kids
90s Nickelodeon game shows FTW. They were all awesome, most of them were hosted by Mark Summers, and I was not lucky enough to be on any of them. I was on the fake version at Universal Studios on a vacation, but I lost. Anyway, it’d be nice to have some slime and giant fake pies and noses on DVD.
Hey Dude
Nickelodeon is taking over this post, but thats mainly because they had so many awesome shows and now have so little DVDs. Hey Dude was another kids dramedy like Salute your Shorts, but just not as funny. It’s been so long since I’ve seen it, and I’m sure it would bring back all kinds of memories.
Rocko’s Modern Life
Amazon has tried releasing this as an exclusive DVD, but the reviews all say they are censored and poorly made. I’d like the series on DVD for real, not on DVRs. I can do that at home. This was one of my favorite cartoons growing up, and I’d love to see it uncut. They could just hire Leonard Maltin to appear before the episodes to explain that times have changed, like he does on the Disney Treasures sets. Come on Nickelodeon, you’ve got disgruntled twenty-somethings to satisfy!
What shows do you want to see come out on DVD or Blu-ray? Let me know in the comments!
