Peanuts 1970s Collection Vol. 1 Review

Previously on SMC, I told you about the cool Peanuts 1960s Collection Warner Bros. released. Well, after that set’s success they’ve released the new Peanuts 1970’s Collection: Volume 1. On two discs it collects the first six television specials from the 70s, all remastered and fancied up.

The Specials

• Play it Again, Charlie Brown (first time on dvd)
• You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown
• There’s No Time For Love, Charlie Brown
• A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving
• It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown (first time on dvd)
• It’s the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown

All the specials look great, and it was a lot of fun watching some of them for the first time. I’d never seen Play it Again, Charlie Brown or It’s a Mystery, Charlie Brown. The latter is really cool because it revolves around Woodstock, who usually doesn’t get as much screen time as everyone else.

As far as bonus features, there is a featurette called Woodstock: Creating Snoopy’s Sidekick that is definitely worth a watch.

The Verdict

My only gripe about this set is that it only has six of the twelve specials from the 70s. It seems like Warner Bros. could have squeezed the other ones on this set, especially since most Peanuts fans probably already own A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and You’re Not Elected, Charlie Brown, which is a bonus special in the Peanuts Holiday box set.

That aside, they’re doing a great job with these decade sets. I look forward to Vol. 2 of the 1970s, and the eventual release of the 80s specials. I brushed up on my Peanuts history and was surprised at how many specials came out in the 80s.
