Wreck-it Ralph

Heads up geeks, Disney just announced that their awesome animated tribute to video games Wreck-it Ralph will be out on Blu-ray on February 12th. That’s not as soon as, say, tomorrow, but it’s not that far away either.

This movie will be great to own, rewatch, and pause to see all the cameos that we didn’t catch in the theater. As for bonus features, you can expect:

Geek Gift Guide: Books

The holidays are upon us, and even though you’re probably being flooded with gift guides, we here at the ‘squatch wanted to add some products that we think are awesome to your radar, whether you’re actually looking for gifts for people or you just troll gift guides looking for cool stuff for yourself. Don’t worry, I do that too.

This year we’re dividing our gift guides up by category, and we’re starting with a Christmas standard: Books. For some reason there are always a few books I want every year, and I don’t like buying them for myself very often so I put them on wishlists. There is no shortage of awesome, geeky books this year, but here are a few standouts that would make great gifts.

App Reviews: Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe and Hero’s Duty Interactive Comic

Posted 8 years ago by Tech

If you’ve seen Wreck-It Ralph, chances are you loved Wreck-It Ralph.  The movie has enough heart, charm, and video game goodness to keep you coming back for more.  Sadly, the Blu-ray won’t be available for a few months, but until then you can revisit the film thanks to Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe and Hero’s Duty Interactive Comic, both available for iOS.

Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe

As with previous Disney interactive storybooks, the book portion of the Wreck-It Ralph Storybook Deluxe app is essentially a retelling of the movie’s plot.  Aimed at a younger audience, the storybook features narration, animation, and artwork that is top notch.  Whenever a character actually has dialog, the actor that played the part provides the voice, making for an authentic retelling of the story.

Go See ‘Wreck-It Ralph’

Wreck-it Ralph Cast

Seriously. Go see it, you’ll love it. I didn’t think I was going to get to see it this weekend but I’m glad I did. It’s crazy funny, has a lot of heart, and is one of the most fun movies I’ve seen in years. The use of actual game characters isn’t as big a part of the story as the ads make you think, and that’s a good thing. The game worlds they created for the movie are great, and there’s plenty of gaming humor thrown in.

The characters are awesome and the casting is perfect. John C. Reilly was born to be Ralph, and the supporting characters are just as funny. Sarah Silverman’s character might get on some people’s nerves, but I thought she was hilarious. The story is actually a little more surprising than you’d expect in an animated movie, and the villain is executed perfectly.

We saw a late show packed with adults and a few kids, and the place went wild the whole time. Lots of huge laughs and tons of nods to gaming and geek culture. There’s even a tiny TMNT cameo at the beginning.

Make sure to get there early to catch the gorgeous new Disney short Paperman, a CG/Hand-drawn blend that I could have watched for two hours.

Kudos to Disney for beating Pixar this year. I liked Brave a lot, but Wreck-It Ralph was amazing. I plan on seeing it again very soon, and you can expect a full review in podcast form too.

Go see it!

What next for Genndy? | Cartoon Brew
Genndy seems like a great choice to helm a CG Popeye movie, and I hope he keeps it faithful to the classic animation and comic strips. I love Popeye and I'll be first in line to see an awesome new version in theaters.
