The fact that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is about to become a hugely marketed property again is finally starting to sink in with me. Everyone loves the new action figures from Nickelodeon and Playmates, and what we’ve seen of the new cartoon looks promising, but I hadn’t even thought about all the other merchandise that is going to be hitting stores very soon.
I was trolling Amazon looking for new TMNT stuff today and found a ton of new kids books. Some are available now, and some say they will be released in January, but I bet they’ll become available a lot sooner than that. If me adding a bunch of coloring books, age 5 and up chapter books, and stickers to my cart isn’t evidence that I’m ready for Turtle Mania Volume II, I don’t know what is.
My wife and I don’t have any kids yet, but that might change in a couple years and that’s a good enough excuse for me to load up on kids TMNT books. Besides, the cover art looks pretty sweet, and who doesn’t enjoy coloring?
Some of the books I found are:
- Saved by the Shell! (available now) – The 2D art for this new show really looks great. I hope they made a comic book to go along with it in this style.
- Robot Rampage! – I don’t like the covers that feature CG art as much as 2D, but this one has Metalhead!
- Turtles to the Rescue! (available now) – A coloring/tattoo book. You know you’re a true TMNT geek when you realize you should order doubles of the new coloring books so you can actually use one and keep one in mint condish.
- Enter the Lair – A 3D book. I don’t know what that means but sign me up. This one actually doesn’t come out until January for some reason.
- Sewer Squad! – A deluxe stickerific book? Booyakashi!
- Ultimate Turtles Fan Book – This one actually looks very awesome. It’s a combo coloring/activity book with full color info pages on the new show. It’s available now.
- Turtle Power! – A giant coloring book that’s available now. I need to stock up on some new crayons.
- Green Team! – Another chapter book, with a pretty cool 2D cover.
- Mutant Origin: Michelangelo and Raphael two-pack and Leonardo and Donatello two-pack – These are available now and are advertised as ‘junior novels’, and are 128 pages. It’s kind of odd to call these Mutant Origins, seeing as how all four Turtles have the same origin, but I’ll read them anyway.
- How to Draw the TMNT – a book pointed out to me by our buddy Alex Deligiannis. I used to eat these kind of books up when I was a kid.
I can’t wait to start seeing TMNT stuff popping up everywhere, and with a company as big as Nickelodeon backing them I think we will. I’d love to see new TMNT cereal, bedsheets, school supplies, and all kinds of stuff like I grew up with.
Are any of you TMNT fans going to pick up stuff like this based on the new show, or will you just stick to action figures?
