New Battle: Los Angeles Trailer Looks Surprisingly Awesome

Posted 9 years ago by Movies

March is an odd time for movies. Studios typically try to get films out that seem like big summer blockbusters, but don’t have big directors or as big of a built-in audience as a Harry Potter or superhero movie would. Maybe that’s why they chose March 11th to release Battle: Los Angeles. After seeing this new trailer, I’d say it looks like it could hold its own against anything next summer can throw at it, at least based on it’s visuals.

I’m excited about the premise of a Black Hawk Down styled Alien invasion movie. The cinematography in the trailer looks great, and I love how surprised everyone seems when the ‘meteors’ turn out to be invaders. I’d love an alien invasion movie that feels real.

Sadly, that’s probably why the ending to Battle: LA will be disappointing. I doubt it will have a terrible, depressing ending (which it should, based on the Alien tech in that trailer). Does that mean Battle: LA will be another alien invasion movie where the aliens miraculously die off, or do we just get lucky? Anyway, I guess if 98% of the movie is awesome, I can deal with a disappointing ending. I know not everyone is as morbid as me.

Seriously though, how can those aliens not win?

Jurassic Park Coming to Blu-ray in 2011!

Jurassic Park Blu-ray
Not actual box art

This is the news I’ve been waiting for. My favorite film of all time (along with it’s underrated first sequel and the-sequel-who-will-not-be-named) is coming to Blu-ray. I could watch Jurassic Park every day if I had to, and now that it’s going to be available in HD for the first time, I just might.

Blu-ray.com is reporting via a French website that someone at Universal has mentioned the Jurassic Park trilogy, Scarface, and various westerns and Hitchcock films will be making their way to the Blu-ray format later this year. I could ramble on for pages about how badly I want Jurassic Park and The Lost World on Blu-ray like yesterday, but I’ll save my rambles for when they’re released.

Update:

Will you be picking any of these Blu-rays up in 2011?

Captain America News: The Cosmic Cube & Red Skull Concept Art

The Cosmic Cube

Happy Monday! Nothing starts a geek week off like a new photo from a superhero movie and an unsubstantiated supposedly-legit piece of concept art to go with it. Joe Johnston’s Captain America movie comes out in July and we should be getting close to the first teaser trailer, but for now we’ll have to cope with a new image of Huge Weaving holding the Cosmic Cube.

Along with Thor, I’m very excited about this movie, but my biggest concerns are with the choice of directors. If this is Johnston’s masterpiece we should be alright, but if it’s anything close to his typical film than it’s in the wrong hands. Regardless, Huge Weaving was an inspired choice to play Red Skull. I may have no idea what the Cosmic Cube is (let me know in the comments), but it’s a new image from the movie and that’s good enough for me.

Complete Star Wars Blu-ray Saga Announced at CES; Available for Pre-order

Star Wars Blu-ray

This doesn’t really come as much surprise, but today Lucasfilm and Fox announced that the complete Star Wars saga is coming to Blu-ray in September 2011 and is available for pre-order now. Surprisingly, Lucas is giving us some choices, just not all the choices that we want. You can pick from:

The individual trilogies are 3-disc sets, with the complete saga clocking in at an impressive 9 discs. They’re claiming over 30 hours of special features, including never-before seen deleted and alternative scenes. No one really expected Lucas to do the right thing and release the original cuts of his films, so instead we’ll be treated to Han shooting second, extra CG, and young Anakin’s ghost in glories HD.

I really want to say I’m only buying the original trilogy, but I know I’ll end up with the complete saga. Episode I came out when I was 14 years old, and for a few years the prequels excited me because I was young and didn’t know better. It took me a few years to realize that they were not good films, and that George Lucas truly didn’t care about his fans, only about making more money. But that’s the topic for another post (or podcast).

Are You Buying Star Wars on Blu-ray?

Let us know if you plan on picking any or all of these sets up, if you’ve been looking forward to them, or if it’s Star Wars that’s going to finally make you switch to Blu-ray.
