‘Looney Tunes Platinum Collection: Volume Two’ Blu-ray Review

Looney Tunes Platinum Collection Volume 2

I’m a huge geek for animated shorts, and my fanboyism is pretty evenly split between classic Disney and Warner Bros. cartoons. For some reason though I always held off on buying Looney Tunes on DVD. I guess I had unconciously decided that I couldn’t afford to buy Disney Treasures sets and all the Looney Tunes DVDs at the same time.

Now I’m really glad I never did because WB has been releasing Looney Tunes on Blu-ray and they look awesome and come packed with bonus features for animation nerds like me. I picked up the Looney Tunes Platinum Collection: Volume 1 a while back when it came out, and WB was kind enough to send a review copy of Volume 2, and it’s just as awesome.

The Set

This set comes with three Blu-ray discs jam-packed with shorts and bonus content. Jerry Beck, one of my favorite bloggers and all-around cool dude, does a great job consulting Warner Bros. to include the best content. There are around 50 shorts in the set, and the whole third disc is full of bonus features.

The first disc contains the following shorts:

  1. A Wild Hare
  2. Buckaroo Bugs
  3. Long-haired Hare
  4. Ali Baba Bunny
  5. Show Biz Bugs
  6. The Wise Quacking Duck
  7. What Makes Daffy Duck?
  8. Book Revue
  9. Deduce, You Say
  10. Porky In Wackyland
  11. You Ought To Be In Pictures
  12. Porky In Egypt
  13. Back Alley Oproar
  14. Little Red Rodent Hood
  15. Canned Feud
  16. Gift Wrapped
  17. Birdy And The Beast
  18. Home, Tweet Home
  19. Going! Going! Gosh!
  20. Zipping Along
  21. Scent-imental Romeo
  22. The Foghorn Leghorn
  23. The High And The Flighty
  24. Tabasco Road
  25. Mexicali Shmoes

I didn’t recognize as many of these shorts from the names as I did in Volume One, but once I started watching them it all came back to me. Ali Baba Bunny was always one of my favorites growing up, along with The Foghorn Leghorn, and any I hadn’t seen were still enjoyable because come on, it’s Looney Tunes.

On the second disc you get:

  1. Wabbit Twouble
  2. Rabbit Fire
  3. Rabbit Seasoning
  4. Duck! Rabbit, Duck!
  5. Drip-along Daffy
  6. My Little Duckaroo
  7. Barbary-coast Bunny
  8. Tortoise Beats Hare
  9. Tortoise Wins By A Hare
  10. Rabbit Transit
  11. Porky’s Hare Hunt
  12. Hare-um Scare-um
  13. Prest-o Change-o
  14. Elmer’s Candid Camera
  15. Bugs Bunny Gets The Boid
  16. The Bashful Buzzard
  17. The Lion’s Busy
  18. Strife With Father
  19. An Itch In Time
  20. A Horsefly Fleas
  21. Hollywood Steps Out
  22. Page Miss Glory
  23. Rocket-bye Baby
  24. Russian Rhapsody
  25. Dough Ray Me-ow

The second disc has all the classic Chuck Jones hunting shorts, witch is worth the price of admission alone. Rabbit Fire, Rabbit Seasoning, and Duck! Rabbit! Duck! are the shorts I remember most as a kid.

The third disc is a Blu-ray exclusive and has a ton of Text Avery animated shorts, as well as some from more obscure characters like Private Snafu and Mr. Hook, along with a ton of featurettes and documentaries.

The Verdict

It’s amazing how entertaining these cartoons still are, and it was fun going through each disc this weekend and reliving my favorites as well as learning more about the people who created them. I really hope Disney is paying attention to what WB is doing with their Classic Animation, because I’d love to see some Blu-ray sets of all my favorite Disney shorts.

This is a must-have for animation buffs, and the only bad thing I can think of is that Volume Three isn’t out yet.

I have all the DVD collections and love every second of every one. Well, okay, some of the 40s Hollywood jokes are lost on any generation since the 40s, but hey, a bad Looney Tunes cartoon is better than a good Pokemon cartoon (haha as if there ever was one) any day!

BTW I also always loved Ali Baba Bunny because I grew up near Pismo Beach…which for the record doesn’t have a lighthouse.
