Ice Age 3

Out today is the newest edition in the Ice Age franchise, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. I received a review copy of the standard-def DVD and had never seen the film. While the movie is not my favorite, the DVD is well put together and if your kids are a fan of the previous two films, I’m sure they’ll like this one too.

The Movie

I saw the first Ice Age film years ago but hadn’t seen The Meltdown (still haven’t) or Dawn of the Dinosaurs. In all honesty, I’m not a fan of this franchise, but since this one has dinosaurs in it, I thought I’d give it a chance. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy this movie very much either.

The Scrat segments are great, old fashioned cartoon fun, but the rest of the movie is filled with bad humor aimed at the parents. If you’re a fan of demeaning gender and homosexual jokes mixed in with your animation, this film is for you. I’ll admit, there were a couple cool action scenes and even some moments that made me laugh, but they were few and far between.

What about the DVD? The version I got is the 2 disc standard-def DVD. I can’t comment on the video quality because my screener was heavily compressed and there were a lot of video artifacts, but I’m sure the retail version will look great.

Ice Age 3 is out today on Blu-ray and DVD.

  • I watched the first one. Well, I never actually sat down to watch it, but I used to work at a video store during the time it was released on video, so we played it a lot. Seemed not so good.

I was never a fan of the animation either. Initially, I thought it was low-budget, but the sequels have proved it is the “style” they are going for. I just think it looks very cheap compared to what Dreamworks and Pixar do.
