Geek Gift Guide: Movies

I’m the guy that always gets people movies for Christmas. I don’t really do it on purpose, it just happens. This year there are a ton of cool DVDs and Blu-rays for the movie buffs on your list, whether they like silly cartoons or classic cinema. Here are a few choices me and the rest of the team put together.

TMNT DVDs

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Complete Classic Series Collection

If you haven’t pulled the trigger on any classic TMNT DVDs over the past decade or so they’ve been released, or you’re just a Turtle completist, this complete series set would be the perfect gift. 23 discs housed in a replica Party Wagon? I’ll take ten.

Harry Potter ebooks Delayed, Paper Industry Rejoices

Posted 9 years ago by Books

Geek confession: I haven’t read the Harry Potter books. I’m about halfway through the first. I wasn’t into Harry Potter until recently, and I don’t read as much as I should. Don’t worry, the HP books are coming out as ebooks for the first time this month right? Oh, wait.

JK Rowling’s weird new digital piggy bank called Pottermore was supposed to offer the ebooks this month, but on the official Pottermore Insider blog, they said:

Finally, the Pottermore Shop, which will sell the Harry Potter eBooks and digital audio books, will now open in the first half of 2012, in order to allow us to focus on our first priority: opening Pottermore to as many people as possible and making the experience as good as it can be.

First half of 2012? That’s like a million years away! Won’t we all be too busy playing our Wii U’s, driving jetpacks, and wearing V-Striped Jumpsuits by then? Who knows. But seriously, how hard is it to release some text files on the Kindle store so I can replace my illegal versions buy them and make JK Rowling more money?

I can understand a movie or a video game getting delayed, but something that should have happened years ago is hard to excuse, especially when you know it would take them about five minutes to export their text files in the proper formats.

I guess I’ll wait a while longer to read the Harry Potter books, because well, I’m lazy.

Missing Links

The Top Hat Sasquatch team reads a lot of blog posts every day, and some slip through the crack or just don’t warrant their own post. That’s where Missing Links comes in. Every few days we collect the best links we’ve come across and pass them on to you.

Cool Stuff: Geeky Peg People

Ghostbusters Peg People

I bet a lot of you played with Fisher Price Little People when you were tiny. They’ve been around for decades, and even thought they were plastic by the time I played with them, I always loved the older, wooden Little People.

That’s the vibe I get from RandomlyGenerated’s Etsy store, although instead of dogs, cowboys, and generic folks, the peg people are characters from our favorite pieces of geek culture. The Ghostbusters are definitely my favorite, although there aren’t any TMNT Peg People on there yet so that could change.

Check out the rest after the jump.

More Harry Potter Ultimate Editions Coming in October

Posted 10 years ago by Movies

Back in December you got to witness my descent into Harry Potter fanboyism thanks to the Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets Ultimate Edition Blu-rays I reviewed. Fast forward a few months and the wife and I are certifiable Harry Potter geeks, eagerly waiting for the last two movies to hit the screen and eventually our media center, to complete the collection.

The Ultimate Editions are pretty awesome, and actually worth the double (or triple) dip if you’ve already bought the films before. Now, Blu-ray.com is reporting that the Prisoner of Azkaban and the Goblet of Fire are coming out in Ultimate form on October 19th. Prisoner of Azkaban is our favorite of the series, so I’m pretty pumped.

They will continue the Creating the World of Harry Potter documentary by adding Part 3: Creatures and Part 4: Sound & Music, which both should be very interesting. Each one will come in a sturdy box filled with collectible cards, photo books, and more.
