Follow That Bird was Sesame Street’s first (and best) movie, and to celebrate it’s 25th Anniversary, Warner Bros has released a special edition DVD. I upgraded from the previous version, and since I’ve written about the movie in the early days, this is mainly going to be a short review of the new DVD.
The previous version of the DVD contained a full screen pan-and-scan version of the film. The good news is that the 25th Anniversary edition is in widescreen. I still wish it had been released on Blu-ray, but I know the format is still young and studios aren’t putting out very many “obscure” titles yet.
As far as bonus content, there is a short interview with Caroll Spinney, the voice and puppeteer of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch. It’s cool getting to hear from him, but the interview didn’t seem focused on the movie very much. There are also a few trailers, and a sing-a-long for the kidoes.
For $10.99, it’s worth upgrading from the old DVD or buying for the first time. If you’re a parent though, be warned. Even though Elmo is on the front and back of the case, this is the extent of his role in the movie:
I think Follow that Bird stands its own against any of the classic Muppet movies, so if you’ve never seen it, give it a shot!
