I wasn’t going to post anything while we’re on vacation in San Francisco, but tonight we had the pleasure of seeing an advanced screening of Hayao Miyazaki’s latest animated feature, Ponyo.
Part of the reason we chose San Francisco as our vacation spot is because we heard Miyazaki was going to be making a rare US appearance to accept an award at the University of Berkeley California. Before we booked our trip, we made sure to get tickets to that event as well as the screening of Ponyo. To make a long story short, Ponyo is awesome.
The story is very simple; it is basically his version of the Little Mermaid. This film seems to be aimed at a younger audience than most of his previous films, but is just as entertaining. It’s a story of innocence, it is gorgeous to look at, and the American voice casting was well done.
If this comes to your neck of the woods in August, I highly suggest seeing it. If it doesn’t, it should be out on Blu-ray and DVD soon.
Expect a post-vacation round-up when I get back. I got to stand in front of Pixar today, but didn’t have a grappling hook handy, so I couldn’t go inside.
