The Halloween season is rapidly approaching and today I officially decided to be pumped about it. I love so many things about Halloween, but one thing that always gets me in the spirit is seeing Halloween-themed candy at the store, and today I brought home a bag full.
So, in the spirit of Holiday money-grubbing by the snack food industry, and my desire to use this site as an excuse to load up on candy, I give you the first edition of a new series called Geek Eats with a special Halloween edition.
Candy Corn Oreos, Snickers Pumpkins, Cadbury Screme Eggs, and Box of Boogers gummies are all pretty awesome, although I wouldn’t recommend eating them all at once in order to write an article. That will make you feel not so awesome.
Candy Corn Oreos
Everyone has been talking about the new Candy Corn Oreos lately, and so I knew I needed to track them down and give them a shot. Apparently there are some people that don’t like Candy Corn, but I enjoy it occasionally and since most things are better in Oreo-form, I bought a bag.
These new Oreos are supposedly a Target exclusive this year, and the checkout lady there informed me that they’ve been selling like hotcakes. I eagerly ripped open the bag when I got home, hoping I’d be in for a flood of Halloweeny tastes that would somehow seem nostalgic even though I was trying them for the first time. Unfortunately, they just taste like super-sweet Oreos.
I usually don’t have a problem eating way more Oreos that one should eat in a sitting, but I could only get two of these down. Nothing screamed Halloween about the taste, unless Halloween just makes you think of all the stomach aches you got as a kid from eating all your candy the night after Trick or Treating.
Maybe I just like regular-type Oreos too much. I’ve never tried any other variety of Oreo, so it could just be that I’m not use to the white cookies. Still, the filling didn’t taste like candy corn to me at all. Your mileage may vary though.
If nothing else, they’re pretty to look at. I guess the white cookie is supposed to represent the white tip of the candy corn, because the filling is just orange and yellow. It’s been a while since I’ve had candy corn, so maybe I just need to track some down and then revisit .
Maybe the secret is adding peanuts, because that makes candy corn amazing.
Snickers Pumpkins
Snickers Pumpkins are nothing new, but I’d never seen them packaged like a candy bar before, so that was a good enough excuse for me to buy some. Snickers candy bars are my absolute favorite candy, and so I always go for the holiday versions whenever I see them.
These Snickers pumpkins are elongated and a little weird looking, but taste just as you’d expect. In fact, them being pumpkin-shaped might actually make them taste better, because that’s possible, right? I wish everything came in the shape of pumpkins this time of year. Think how awesome it would be if you could get pumpkin-shaped Big Macs or Oreos or Doritos. Pumpkin-shaped Doritos, get on that, scientists.
Cadbury Screme Egg
Every Easter I hork down as many Reese’s Eggs as I can fit in my mouth at once, and I don’t have time for many other egg-shaped things until after the holiday and the Reese’s Eggs are all gone. My wife, however, loves Cadbury Creme Eggs. I tolerate them, but they’re not my favorite.
However, change the title to Screme Eggs, put a bunny in a witch’s hat on the box, and you’ve got me interested. I don’t remember seeing these before, so I’m not sure if they’re new, but they’re basically just Cadbury Creme Eggs with a bit of green in the middle. I was expecting a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Pie on the inside but I was let down. Still, a rabbit in a witch’s hat!
tl;dr: Exactly Like a Cadbury Creme Egg But With a Little Bit of Green Food Coloring in the Middle™
Box of Boogers
I never associated boogers with Halloween before, but I get the faux-gross candy thing. Kids like pretending to eat eye balls, and they love eating real boogers and are just weird in general, so these will probably sell well.
The thing that drew me to this box was the crazy character art. The crazy chef guy looks awesome, and totally sold me on the concept of eating gummy boogers.
He looks like something you’d see in a crazy 80s or 90s toy package or a comic book, and not a cheap box of candy at Target. The flavors are Snottermelon, Sour Green Boogy, and Lemon Loogy, which for some reason require a skull and an eyeball to make if we’re going by the illustration of the nasty chef. I would think the main ingredient would be boogers.
I’m not a big fan of gummy candy (I’m more of a chocoholic), but these aren’t bad. Thankfully they don’t really taste like boogers. I think I’ll grab a couple of these boxes closer to Halloween and dish them out to a few lucky kids who come by my house and stand on my porch. I’d say kids who come to my house and actually ask for treats, but most kids these days just stand there with a blank expression until you give them candy.
To sum it all up, this was a rather disappointing first run at Halloween goodies, but it’s still early September. There will be plenty of spooky Geek Eats in store for the next few weeks. Until then, I think I’ll go eat a bunch of vegetables.
