Star Wars #1 Nearly Makes Up For The Disappointing Prequels

Star Wars #1 cover

It is a dark time for the Star Wars Universe. Fans are still reeling in disappointment over the prequel films. The animated Clone Wars series has met a mostly lukewarm reaction. And the latest disturbance, the announcement of a Star Wars VII film in 2015, holds more trepidation than it does promise.

Dark Horse Comics’ new comic book series is one of the most promising ventures in recent years. For the longest time the Star Wars books have been widely splintered into watered-down, far-reaching story lines. This series goes back to the start.

They’ve just launched Star Wars #1, a new series set in the months following the destruction of the first Death Star in Episode IV: A New Hope.

missinglinks

The Top Hat Sasquatch team reads a lot of blog posts every day, and some slip through the crack or just don’t warrant their own post. That’s where Missing Links comes in. Every few days we collect the best links we’ve come across and pass them on to you.

Denny’s “The Hobbit” Menu Video Review
I’m glad I only entertained the thought of going to Denny’s for a split second, because these Hobbit-inspired dishes look pretty disgusting.

Will ‘Star Wars Episode VII’ Return To Yavin 4 From ‘Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope?’
This sounds like a plan to me. I always loved the look of Yavin IV in A New Hope, and Luke training a new breed of Jedi could make for a fun movie.

Things We Saw Today: These Hobbit Cupcakes Would Make for a Great Second Breakfast
Mmm….Hobbit cupcakes.

High Frame Rate and ‘The Hobbit:’ The Allure of Middle-Earth is Crystal Clear at 48fps | /Film
Interesting thoughts on the 48 fps thing with The Hobbit. I really wish there was a theater close to me showing the film in HFR.

Dark Lord: an evil overlord trapped in a kid’s body – Boing Boing
Another YA novel I'd like to read. This one sounds hilarious and I hope they make a movie.

Life As We Knew It – asteroid catastrophe young adult novel – Boing Boing
Cool-sounding YA novel that I might check out. Because, you know, regular-adult novels are so looong.

The Empire Strikes Back with Toys: An Interview with Bobby Sussman

As toy fans, there’s something magical about constructing dioramas. We arrange our precious collectibles in such a way to tell a story or simply showcase them. Often they’re done for our own enjoyment but all fans can appreciate the really elaborate creations. I used to think I had a knack for building such scenes. After stumbling upon the work of artist Bobby Sussman, I can easily say he’s a master at this toy-based specialty.

For almost a full year Bobby has been recreating the 1980 Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back with action figures and handmade sets. He then captures the scenes with his trusty iPhone 4s and posts the photo collages to Instagram. I caught up with Bobby via email for an interview about his process and the inspiration behind this project.

Geek Gift Guide: Books

The holidays are upon us, and even though you’re probably being flooded with gift guides, we here at the ‘squatch wanted to add some products that we think are awesome to your radar, whether you’re actually looking for gifts for people or you just troll gift guides looking for cool stuff for yourself. Don’t worry, I do that too.

This year we’re dividing our gift guides up by category, and we’re starting with a Christmas standard: Books. For some reason there are always a few books I want every year, and I don’t like buying them for myself very often so I put them on wishlists. There is no shortage of awesome, geeky books this year, but here are a few standouts that would make great gifts.

LEGO News Roundup: New City Sets, Minifigures Series 9, and More

LEGO Helicopter Arrest

There has been a ton of LEGO awesomeness popping up in my RSS feeds lately, so I decided it was time for a LEGO News Roundup. LEGO is teasing a lot of great looking new products for next year, and even with TMNT LEGO sets coming out I’m most excited about the new City sets. The City line will always be my favorite, and some of the new sets look great.

I love the Helicopter Arrest set. It looks like an abandoned dock hideout with a place to stash a boat, boarded up windows, and a pretty snazzy orange truck. It almost reminds me of the Gator Landing set I use to have back in the day, just minus the gators.
