Old School ‘Mighty Morphin Power Rangers’ Coming to DVD in August

Power Rangers

If you’re a late 80s, early 90s kid like me, you probably watched the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers show on TV. In my case, Power Rangers was decidedly uncool in my grade, so I had to hide my love for the show from my friends and pretend not to like it during school. I was into the first three seasons of the show and was very excited when the movie came out.

I’ve went back and watched some of the early episodes in the past few years out of curiosity, and they are surprisingly rewatchable as long as you’re in an ironic state of mind. The horrible English dubs from Rita Repulsa and all the other characters from the foreign clips are hilarious, and the monsters keep getting more far fetched. Basically, it’s evidence from my childhood as to why I’m so weird now.

It’s been available to stream on Netflix for a long time, but this August it’s coming to DVD (kind of) for the first time. Shout Factory is releasing ‘Season One, Volume One’ on August 21st. Normally, a company breaking up seasons into volumes is bad news, but I was shocked to find out there are 60 episodes in this season and 30 in this set.

Needless to say, I’ll be picking up this DVD so that someday I can force my kids to relive the Green Ranger/White Ranger saga with me again.

Shirt of the Week

I don’t think the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers get enough nostalgia-love yet, but I’m sure in a few more years people will start remembering them more, and write about how crazy the first shows were.

Thats why I picked an awesome Power Rangers shirt as the first Shirt of the Week here on SMC. It was a close race between the shirt above and this crazy Zed Shirt, but it came down to a matter of practicality (I’m not brave enough to wear the Zed shirt, but the PR logo is doable).

10 Retro Shows I want on DVD

The World of David the Gnome

I fondly remember watching David the Gnome on Nickelodeon all the time. My memories of watching Nick in the 90s makes me think of Grandma’s house, peanut butter sandwiches, Sprite, and Tom Bosley. I’m not one to watch episodes on YouTube, so I would love to have some DVDs of this show. It gets bonus points for such and awesome theme song!

salute

Salute Your Shorts

When it comes to the live action kids shows of the 90s, I think Salute Your Shorts was the absolute best. The characters and stories were cool, it wasn’t trying to be profound at all, and it was just fun. Donkeylips , Ug Lee, Telly, Sponge, Budnick, they were all great. Pinsky is of course in the band Rilo Kiley now with the girl from The Wizard, a double dose of nostalgia. There have been plenty of bootleg DVDs around, but I want the real thing.

histeriaad

Histeria!

I love hearing about my wife’s nostalgia, and Histeria! was definitely her favorite cartoon. It was a great show from the 90s WB era, and the cool thing was that it actually was a little educational. Maybe with Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Pinky and the Brain, and Freekazoid on DVD now, there’ll be a chance.
