Cool Stuff: Custom Carded Action Figures for Movies That Never Had Action Figures

Custom Action Figures

eBay seller Old Colony Hobbies is doing something awesome, and isn’t even charging an arm and a leg for it. They’re creating custom action figures and cards for characters that never got the toy treatment (for obvious reasons). I’m talking Pennywise from It, Michael Myers, Jaws figures, Lethal Weapon, and more.

They look incredibly real and the first time I saw them I thought they were. I can’t wait to see what else they come up with, but I’m hoping for some Three Amigos figures.

Book Review: JAWS: Memories from Martha’s Vineyard

Posted 8 years ago by Books

When a film shoots on location, it’s normal for the production to use people from the surrounding community as extras or maybe even as minor players.   But when 27 year old filmmaker Steven Spielberg brought three mechanical sharks to Martha’s Vineyard to shoot an adaptation of the best-selling novel Jaws, the island was so remote that he had no choice but to use locals for many spots in the cast and crew.  Because of this necessity, Jaws isn’t just a film about a killer shark, but is a snapshot of this small vacation destination in the 1970s.  Similarly, Titan Books’ new release, Jaws: Memories from Martha’s Vineyard by Matt Taylor, is not only an extensive look behind the scenes of this seminal summer blockbuster, but also reveals for us the experience of the locals who gave the film such a colorful pallet of personalities.

This Just In: Retro Trading Cards

Retro Trading Cards

Time for a new series here on the ‘squatch, This Just In. Inspired by Cool and Collected’s ‘It Came in the Mail’ posts, and by the fact that geeks love finding random junk, I decided it was time to start posting photos when I snag weird retro stuff. I troll eBay for the weirdest stuff, but when I was putting together the ‘Friends of Top Hat Sasquatch’ t-shirt presale, I realized I wanted some cool goodies to throw in to thank everyone for supporting the site, and I was lucky enough to score a huge lot of cards for a pretty good price.

There are 50 odd packs in total, but I love the art and wanted to show off some of my favorites. I’ll admit, I’m going to keep a few of these for myself, but if you have favorites, let me know when you order a shirt and I’ll try to accomodate everyone.

Just please, don’t eat the gum.

We’re Going to Need a Bigger TV

Posted 8 years ago by Movies

I get a lot of PR emails, but when one about the restoration of Jaws for its August 14th, 2012 Blu-ray release date popped in my inbox, I had to check it out. Jaws is my co-favorite movie of all time, along with Jurassic Park, and I’ve been waiting for it to come out on Blu-ray for years. Luckily, it’s Universal’s 100th Anniversary this year and Jaws is getting the extra-special treatment. They put together this surprisingly good behind the scenes video of their restoration process, and it looks like they’re doing everything right.

I want to show this to my wife and say “We’re going to need a bigger TV” and see if that works.
