Forget Star Wars, Spend Your Money on These Blu-rays

Posted 9 years ago by Movies

If you’re like us, you’re so upset about George Lucas tampering with his classic films that you don’t even want to buy the new Blu-ray set. As much as I’d love to watch the new bonus features, the thought of shelling out $80 and not even getting the versions of the films that I love drives me crazy.

Luckily for my fellow disgruntled Star Wars fans, there are a lot of amazing Blu-rays available to fill that void, some already available and some coming very soon. Here are a few.

Citizen Kane

Whether or not you agree with the masses that Citizen Kane is the best movie ever made or not, you can’t ignore it’s cultural and historical significance (Hey, just like Star Wars!). Admittedly, I’ve only watched it all the way through once, and it was years ago. I’ve had it sitting on my media center for over a year in not-so-glorious SD resolution, and now that I own this impressive Blu-ray set I’m glad I’ve waited to watch it again. The box itself is gorgeous and holds a lot of goodies, and the movie has been upgraded with a 4K scan. There are tons of bonus features, but the best part is the price.

Watch This: The 1944 Captain America Serial

Posted 9 years ago by Movies

I thoroughly enjoyed the new Captain America movie. In fact, I think it’s safe to say that I loved it. Since seeing it I’ve been absorbing the character in as many ways as I can, through cartoons, the movie from the 90s, and now the 1944 serial. The story hardly has anything to do with the Captain America you know and love, but it’s an interesting piece of geek history.

Make sure to stick around until the 4:40 mark or so to hear a scientist say “How did you find out about my vibrator?”

Super Cute Superhero Art Prints on Etsy

It’s too bad these are reserved for someone, but check out these super cute superhero art prints from Etsy artist Loopzart. Anything with Batman and The Hulk smiling is OK in my book.

She also has a Star Wars set (also reserved) that are equally worth checking out, as well as lots of individual prints.

‘The Avengers’ Spoiler of the Day Featuring Thor and Captain America

Avengers...disco!

Something we discussed in the first episode of Bubble Pipe Theater (that should go live next week) is the fact that so many photos and videos of next summer’s two biggest movies, The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers, are leaking online like crazy. Fanboys are in full-on speculation/rage mode about a lot of the things leaking, but lets face it, these folks know what they’re doing, and the final product is going to look a hell of a lot better.

That being said, the footage from the ‘Avengers’ set that leaked today featuring Thor and Captain America can be considered spoilerish, so read on after the jump.

(Almost) Shirt of the Day: Avenger Time

Posted 9 years ago by Shirts

As I’ve said before, I love a good mash-up. This Threadless submission by Steven Lefcourt is another brilliant example. He combined the two most iconic of Marvel’s Avengers with Finn and Jake from Pendleton Ward’s animated series Adventure Time. The character cross-over is brilliant but title combination makes it almost a magical mix. (The inclusion of Mjolnir in the title graphic is an extra special touch.)
