Comic Book Review: Damaged #1-4

Posted 9 years ago by Comics

On the surface, it would be easy to dismiss Radical Publishing’s Damaged as a Punisher knock-off.  After all, both feature a gun-toting vigilante dealing out his own brand of explosive justice.  However, once you start digging a little deeper into Damaged, you’ll see there’s more meat on the bone than you might expect.

In 1975, Henry and Frank Lincoln are brothers and officers for the San Francisco Police Department.  In the beginning, they share a similar outlook on working within the justice system to stop crime.  But when Henry’s son is kidnapped, his views change significantly.  Now, Henry takes matters into his own hands when he uncovers a pedophile ring involving prominent members of the Bay Area’s business leaders.  He recruits his brother to help him burn down the mansion where the group meets, but Frank has second thoughts at the last minute.  The two scuffle and a Molotov cocktail accidentally sets off one of the gasoline bombs.  To save his brother from the flames, Henry jumps on top of Frank, receiving serious burns to the right side of his body, including an imprint on his chest where Frank’s super-heated badge burns into his skin.

The Cult of LEGO

I think by now it should be obvious to you that we here at Top Hat Sasquatch are huge LEGO fans. Even before the days of licensed sets, LEGO appealed to geeks and non-geeks alike, enabling creative play with endless possibilities. It’s no surprise that the LEGO brand has amassed such a huge cult following that continues to grow every year.

If you read this site and are a big fan of LEGO, you’re probably familiar with John Baichtal and Joe Meno’s work. John writes for the always-awesome blog GeekDad and Joe is the founder of BrickJournal. The Cult of LEGO is the product of their hard work and fanboy dedication to the little plastic bricks from Denmark.

‘Apples to Apples’ Xbox Live Arcade Game Review

Apples to Apples

Apples to Apples has come pretty far since it first got published in 1999. It’s currently the (give or take) third best selling board game on Amazon, and you can’t go to a department store without seeing the red boxes overflowing from the shelves, especially around the holidays. Well, the Apples to Apples empire just grew even larger, because now you can buy it on Xbox Live Arcade, and it’s a pretty nice digital version of the game.

DVD Review: Chillerama

Chillerama

When I first got the email asking if we’d like to review an advanced copy of Chillerama, I grew hesitant when I saw the film’s tagline: “The Ultimate Midnight Movie.” For the last decade or so, there have been a glut of films that are meant to pay homage to old B-movies, but they normally just use this as an excuse to have no budget, crappy special effects, terrible actors, and even worse scripts. They say they’re being tongue-in-cheek, but they very rarely ever succeed at being funny, let alone entertaining in even the “so bad it’s good” way that the B-movies they’re spoofing actually are. But, as I always say, I’ll watch anything once, so I put my expectations in check and told them to send Chillerama posthaste. Much to my surprise, this isn’t your typical half-assed love note to the drive-in.

LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace Blu-ray Review (with bonus video)

Posted 9 years ago by Movies

I get sent a lot of crazy stuff that people want me to review. Some of it gets on the site and some of it doesn’t. I wasn’t sure what to think about the direct-to-Blu-ray and Walmart-exclusive animated short film LEGO Star Wars: The Padawan Menace until I heard Tim talk about it on the podcast, but I’m glad to say I was pleasantly surprised.

Not only am I growing utterly intolerant of prequel-era Star Wars, but I’d never heard LEGO characters talk despite being super cute in silent, video-game form, so I was leery. Luckily, it turns out that whoever wrote and animated this short film had a lot of creative freedom and decided to pump it full of slapstick, tongue-in-cheek humor, and lots of Star Wars in-jokes. Oh, and George Lucas makes a couple appearances.
