Post Christmas/Blizzard Update

iPad Mini

Hi there! Sorry for the lack of posts over the holidays, but things got a little Cray-Cray in my neck of the woods. I got the Flu From Hell™ right before Christmas, and then Indianapolis was slammed with a blizzard [obligatory cute dog pic] on the 26th, which really doesn’t effect my ability to post here but I like using the word blizzard as an excuse for things.

This was a one-big-gift-instead-of-lots-of-little-ones kind of year, because I scored an iPad Mini. I’ll be writing more about it later, but I finally feel like I can get into reading comics again now thanks to this little device. I’ve tried reading comics on my wife’s iPad, but wasn’t too crazy about the weight and size, so the Mini is perfect for me.

I’ve caught up on the entire IDW TMNT series and I love it. Besides Comixology, I downloaded Comic Zeal Reader to handle all the digitally acquired CBR/CBZ files I had on my computer. Now I have a few GBs of comics that should last me quite a while.

The iPad Mini is an awesome gaming device too. I have a ton of games on my iPhone but now I think I’ll do most of my gaming on the Mini and reserve my phone for more phone-type things.

Besides that I got a cool little LEGO set from the new Galaxy Squad line that I’ll post in the next few days. I still have a stack of books to review for the site too.

I have high hopes for 2013 here on the ‘squatch, so I think it will be a fun year!

So, how was your Christmas?

I recently bought an iPad (4th gen) and returned it because, like you, I didn’t like the weight and size. As a result, I’ve been thinking about an iPad Mini. I’ve heard they operate a bit sluggishly in comparison to the full-sized iPad. Have you experienced any of that slowness?

I also have a bunch of, ahem, digitally acquired CBR files. Do you have to transfer those to your mini or can you access them via Dropbox? I’m just asking because it might push me to getting a higher capacity mini—if and when I get one.

    • I don’t mind the performance since I’m just using it for this kind of stuff and I have my laptop for more heavy-duty stuff. I think they’ll get a retina update next year and that will be awesome.
With Comic Zeal, you transfer through iTunes, but I think there might be a Dropbox option.

  • Christmas here was pretty good. We didn’t do much for ourselves because we’re in the midst of house-hunting, but my wife is a huge Tarantino fan so I bought her the blu-ray Tarantino XX collection. Honestly I probably wouldn’t have known about it if I hadn’t seen it on here.

For me she set up a scaled down live-action version of Die Hard with me as John McClane hunting her and a friend through our apartment complex on Christmas Eve. She stole my shoes and made me walk over crushed candy canes (better than broken glass, but it still hurt) and then run around in the dark and the cold barefoot with only a nerf gun. It was pretty awesome.
