‘Officially Limited’: A Documentary About the Collectible Poster Scene

Posted 7 years ago by Movies

If you read this site, you know I love geek art. I’m in the middle of redecorating my home office, and I literally have stacks of posters and prints framed and ready to hang. Most of the art I have wasn’t hard to get, but having bought one poster from Mondo directly and one after the fact on eBay, I understand how frustrating it can be to get limited edition art. This upcoming documentary by John Otterbacher is about the new and somewhat controversial nature of poster collecting, and it looks great.

He talks to folks from Mondo, Gallery 1988, and more about the recent phenomenon of super-limited edition posters by great artists. The documentary is up on Kickstarter-like IndieGoGo right now, and has a way to go to reach it’s goal.

As I finally get my office in order I’m going to posting a lot more about the art that I have and inviting you all to share your geek art collections (and maybe turn it into a contest of some sort), but in the meantime I can’t wait to see this documentary.

  • I heard about this a little while ago. I’ve kind of gotten into the poster thing just by virtue of living in Austin and going to the Alamo Drafthouse. Mondo’s store used to be attached to the original Drafthouse, then the South Lamar location (and I think a small one at the Ritz, but I forget) so we would peruse the shop before movies. This was back when they were just making t-shirts. Then we started to see these awesome prints for special screenings and it’s just gotten crazy since then. We have a few Mondo prints and a few others by different local artists, but I have to really re-evaluate which ones to try for now because we are literally out of wall space with 6-7 posters left to frame. It’s a little out of control.

I’m still kicking myself for not buying that Jeff Proctor TMNT print back when it was easier to get them because “$40 seems like too much for a poster.” Oh what a fool I was! I just checked Ebay and there’s one up, but it’s $600. Plus it’s the variant and I much prefer the normal print with the green.

    • That poster was the first Mondo print I got interested in, and I’m kicking myself for not trying to snag it too. I hope to find one someday, but yeah, they go for a lot on ebay when they’re even on there.

  • I’m definitely in the camp of these posters are “too rich for my blood”, but I am really intrigued by the whole business model. It seems weird to me that these artists (and places like Mondo) don’t at least double their output or print runs as it seems like it would be just enough to satiate enough of the demand without obliterating the collectability and rarity, but then again, maybe it’s only the super rarity that drives the interest…
