I Want a Dog For Christmas, Charlie Brown

I’ve gotten a late start to the holiday season this year, but Warner Bros. is helping find my Christmas spirit with all their awesome DVD and Blu-ray releases of late. Following up on the 1960s and 1970s collections, today I’ve got my hands on I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown in a deluxe edition DVD.

This Peanuts special is a rare beast. It’s a modern production (2003), and it’s very enjoyable. It revolves around Linus and Lucy’s younger brother Rerun trying desperately to convince his Mom to buy him a dog for Christmas. She doesn’t budge, so he settles for spending some quality time with Snoopy. Snoopy’s brothers make appearances and there is a lot of genuinely funny dialog.

I missed this made-for-TV special when it aired in 2003, and I wasn’t even aware it was a modern Peanuts special until I read about it. They did a great job of capturing the essence of what made the classic Peanuts special. The children voice actors are great and definitely do justice to Charles Schulz’s writing. The dialog in the script for I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown was taken straight from Schulz’s comic strips, which I think was a great choice.

There is obviously a huge well of material available if they decide to continue making Peanuts specials like this, and I hope they do. Something about the Peanuts is very timeless, and it’s nice to see new material that doesn’t feel like it came from the 21st Century. I Want a Dog for Christmas, Charlie Brown is going to be a staple in my Christmas special library now.

It is available on DVD now, and you still have time to pick it up before Christmas gets here. The deluxe edition DVD also contains Happy New Year, Charlie Brown, as well as a bonus featurette on the relationship between Linus and Lucy.
