Heathcliff – Rebel Without a Claws

Part of the fun of enjoying nostalgia is finding out whether stuff you once liked are “rewatchable” or not. Its great when you end up enjoying things more than you did the first time around, like Alf and Fraggle Rock for me. It’s not so great when it turns out like this.

I knew that 80s and 90s television animation was pretty horrible from a quality point of view, but I did not remember them being this bad. Everything from the writing to the sound effects and music is absolutely terrible. But, I will admit I was laughing pretty hard at how bad it was, so I guess in a way that makes it good?? Maybe?

Not so much. Heathcliff isn’t a very likable character, even though he’s voiced by Mel Blanc. And, this episode revolves around Tracer, an evil looking creature that Heathcliff says is a kitten. I think he looks more like a rabbit on meth, or maybe a Chupacabra.

I was going to further discuss this episode, but April Fools! I’m not, because I already had to watch it once, and I don’t want to watch it again. But don’t fret, you can see it in all its glory below.

What shows have you tried rewatching lately? Were you disappointed or delighted?

  • Gummi Bears and Tailspin. I was completely delighted!

  • I’ll have to check those out again. I loved everything on the Disney Afternoon.

  • I had rewatched Heathcliff a few months ago, and found them very watchable, but I also had the flu. I tried watching The Littles. Got through an episode or two, then was back to looking at the ol’ computer. I have Smurfs at the bottom of my Netflix queue. One day it may reach the top.

  • First of all, I just found your blog on Facebook and have been looking through everything. I am definitely subscribing. 😀
I don’t think Heathcliff is all that bad. I haven’t watched it since I was four, so it’s not quite as awesome as I had remembered it. The sound effects are pretty bad compared to now and the animation’s a little quirky (does it seem to anyone else that the reactions are really delayed?)
No, for me the worst series to go back and rewatch was the Legend of Zelda. I watched it every Friday before going to Kindergarten. It was one of the most awesome series ever at the time. Then I thought I’d experience it again. Link’s “Excuuuuuse me, Princess!” got old after the first episode. I had to quit watching.
The Real Ghostbusters is also bad.
On the other hand the Sat AM Sonic the Hedgehog and X-Men series from the 90’s are just as good as they were when I first watched them. X-Men is a bit dated, though. My friend and I laughed out loud when we heard Jubilee call someone a dweeb. I don’t think I’ve heard that word since the early 90’s, lol.

    • Welcome!

I’ve got volumes 3 and 4 of the 90s X-Men cartoon on the way for review, I can’t wait to see it again, it’s been years.
