Buckyballs Giveaway [Update]

Posted 10 years ago by Toys

All good geeks need awesome desk toys, and there really aren’t that many that compare with how awesome Buckyballs are. In case you’ve never seen them, Buckyballs are little Rare Earth magnets that can be made into a bzillion shapes. Each set comes with 216 magnets, and will probably keep you from getting a lot of work done, but that’s what desk toys are for right?

The good folks who make Buckyballs have asked me to host a giveaway, and so three lucky readers will get their very own set. The contest is open to US residents only and will end on Monday, December 6th at 6pm EST.

All you have to do to enter is leave a comment here telling me what you would build if you had a thousand sets of Buckyballs. Personally, I would attempt to construct some sort of spacecraft.

The winners will be chosen randomly, but if you dont’ win you’re still in luck. if you order some Buckyballs by December 15th and use the coupon code saturdaymorningcentral, you can get 15% off! Good luck!

Update: I used random.org and it churned out Alex, Joe MC, and UberDorkGirlie as the winners. Congrats, and thanks to everyone for entering! Also, make sure to subscribe to the RSS feed because we’ve got some big contests coming up soon!

  • Alex Porter

Either the death star or Sonic’s power ring generator 🙂

  • I think I would make a suit of it and walk around like a human MRI machine, attracting all metal objects.

  • Corey

I think I would make a Statue of Magneto.

  • My 3-year-old is excited about DNA from They Might Be Giants’ HERE COMES SCIENCE, so I’d be real tempted to make a huge DNA model out of them first.

  • Quentin

If I had a lot of these I’d try my damnedest to make a pair of pants. Most likely I’d end up making some kind of irregular blob tho.

  • It might be cop out, but with all magnet desk toys I just see how tall of a free standing structure I can build. With 216 magnets of these strength, it should be pretty tall!

  • While the double helix is an awesome idea, I think my daughters would disown me if I didn’t attempt a Yoda. I managed a life size one out of cake, magnetic balls should be fairly easy. (That sounded confident, right?)

  • A hand, so I don’t have to keep pecking at this damn keyboard with this hook.

  • Mint

I’d try to build an in-scale replica of the Eiffel Tower… followed by R2D2. 😀

  • Bryce

I’d build a safe to store all of the important documents that I have on 7 inch floppies. No one would steal them then.

  • I would build strands of bucky balls hanging from the ceiling fan then turn it on full blast.
Stand in the middle of the room. Watch centripetal force take vengeance on everyone else in the room!

  • I would probably create little versions of my favorite 8-bit heroes. Changing them each time i revisit a one of those games at home.

  • Space station/ fajita stand, in conjunction with the Russian government.

  • Amber Garner

In the holiday spirit, I would build a ton of ornaments and decorate my entire tree in Buckyballs.
